What is Kinfolk Consulting?

Kinfolk Consulting is a maternal and community health consulting firm helping organizations, providers, and communities turn ideas into sustainable solutions.

Rooted in community birth and reproductive justice, we bring together strategy, operations, research, policy, and implementation to address the systems that shape maternal healthcare. We work with birth workers, birth centers, community-based organizations, healthcare organizations, funders, and public-sector partners to strengthen programs, develop workforces, improve systems of care, and expand access to high-quality, culturally responsive services.

Our work is grounded in the experiences of the people closest to the challenges we are working to solve - particularly communities that have historically been underserved, under-resourced, or excluded from decision-making.

Whether we are helping launch a birth center, assessing a maternal health workforce, strengthening organizational infrastructure, developing a new program, examining policy and payment barriers, or creating an implementation strategy, our focus is the same: building solutions that work in practice and create lasting change.

Kinfolk has deep roots in community birth and the professionals who make it possible, including midwives, doulas, birth centers, and other community-based maternal health providers. That experience shapes how we approach larger systems.

We understand the operational realities providers face because we work close to the work itself. We also understand that improving maternal health requires engagement beyond any single provider or organization. It requires collaboration among community-based providers, hospitals, health systems, public health agencies, Medicaid and managed care organizations, policymakers, funders, community organizations, and the families these systems exist to serve.

Kinfolk helps create those connections.We strengthen the people and organizations doing the work. Equity is part of the work, not a separate work stream.

Maternal health systems do not affect every community in the same way. Geography, race, income, transportation, workforce availability, insurance coverage, provider access, institutional trust, and other social and structural conditions shape people's experiences of care. We believe those realities should inform how programs, policies, and systems are designed from the beginning.

Our approach centers community voice while also addressing the structural conditions that determine whether equitable access is actually possible. We envision a maternal health system where communities have access to high-quality, culturally responsive care; birth workers and community-based providers have the resources and infrastructure to thrive; and the systems surrounding them are designed to support equitable, sustainable care.

Kinfolk works toward a future where community knowledge informs policy, providers are meaningfully integrated into systems of care, and innovative models of maternal healthcare have the support they need to grow and endure.
